Oslo/Hamburg, 21st June 2021. Airport operator Avinor has awarded Travel Retail Norway (TRN), a joint venture between Gebr. Heinemann and Norse-Trade, the concession to continue its retail operations at Norwegian Airports in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger. The new contract will start on 1 January 2023 and has a term of five years. However, TRN will cease its operations at Kristiansand Airport when its current contract ends on 31 December 2022, as the airport is part of a separate package, which was not awarded to TRN.
Tore Hov, Managing Director TRN, states: ”We are delighted about winning the tender and that our highly valued partnership with Avinor continues. Our combination of a strong local culture, global expertise and innovative retailing has proven again that TRN and Gebr. Heinemann are capable of creating value for the airport and the customers. I must also thank all our fantastic 1200 staff members, many of which are on temporary leave now. We have been operating these shops for 17 years, and it wouldn’t have been a success without the world’s greatest employees.”
Raoul Spanger, Chief Operating Officer Gebr. Heinemann, adds: “Even though we very much regret the discontinuation of our operations at Kristiansand Airport after 2022, we are delighted about the renewed trust put in us for the retail operations of the remaining sites. Over the past 17 years, our joint venture TRN and Avinor have succeeded in building a strong and loyal relationship with shoppers at Norwegian Airports. We are feeling deeply rooted in our Norwegian business, and strive to continue to cater to the needs of passengers at all Norwegian Airports and to set the future course for Norwegian Travel Retail. The trusting and long-standing partnership with Avinor and TRN’s commercial achievements of the past form the perfect foundation for this.”
Requirements of the tender included, among other things, a strong focus on sustainability in all business processes as well as regionality with a local sense footprint in design and assortment. In addition, digital concepts to enhance the in-store and online shopping experience were key elements. The tender win is a confirmation of TRN’s ability to demonstrate how new ideas and concepts as well as an intelligent assortment strategy will enable growth after the Covid-crisis for all partners involved. It also underlines that the combination of local know-how and Gebr. Heinemann’s over 140-years of international expertise in the business are the ideal prerequisite for shaping the Travel Retail marketplace of the future.
